Book Review - Secrets in the Cellar

Last weekend I had a horrifying experience when I read a book based on a true crime story – ‘Secrets in the Cellar’ by John Glatt.

The book describes the dark secrets of an Austrian family.

-      The book describes how a well-educated, qualified, super-intelligent engineer (73 year- old in 2008) turns his family home into a house of horrors.
-     The book describes how he inflicted violence and inhumane behaviour on his family of a wife and 7 children
-     The book describes the bloody monster started raping his 11-year old innocent daughter and then put her into a secret cellar when she was 18 beneath his house for over 24 years.
-     There he continues raping her and fathers her 7 children!
-   The book describes how the daughter and her children suffered for 24 years in the underground dungeon under pathetic conditions of suffocating air, darkness, and infectious atmosphere without sunlight, fresh air, food and rain.
-    Apart from such atrocious crime, he was charged with up to 3000 other rape cases later when the missing daughter mystery was revealed.

I swear, I couldn’t sleep well that night after I finished the novel in two days, unusually quickly not because it was an interesting write-up but so as to get out of this terror-stricken story. And after reading it, I could not believe how someone, atleast a father could be so meryless, so wicked and cruel who kept inflicting such shamefully horrifying acts to his own daughter. He was definitely a devil in the human skin!

While reading the intriguing novel and the news reports, I couldn’t understand why  the  Austrian govt, gave him only 18 month imprisonment for his first rape charges which were infact ERASED later after 15 years, and what was more strange is the govt. just gave him a mere life-imprisonment sentence for multiple crimes.

Had the govt. given him a punishment of severe nature or life-sentence at the first place, don’t you think, the innocent daughter would have been saved from getting her whole life spoilt by her father.

So, my question is
